Must Have Item of the Week

THIS WEEK: The Gurgling Jug
FOUND AT: Homestyle: 229 Westminster St., Providence RI 02903 (401)277-1159, homestyleri.com

aaaaakav4i8aaaaaaeropg.jpg

The gurgling jug is a traditional handicraft first produced in England by potteries located in and around Dartmouth, Devonshire. In the late 1950’s a customized pair of gurgling jugs were presented to her majesty, Queen Elizabeth, and ever since that time collectors worldwide have sought after the jugs.
When filled with liquid, air is trapped in the fish’s tail. As that liquid is poured out again, the air is gradually released and produces a surprisingly loud and rather wonderful gurgling or “glug-glug” sound. Because of this, these fish-shaped pitchers are also often referred to as glug glug jugs. The larger the jug, the louder and deeper the glug.

I was surprised and excited when I noticed our own Homestyle on Westminster St. was offering an abundance of glug glug jugs in great colors. I was long overdue on a wedding gift for a good friend, and as soon as I spotted it, I knew the glug glug jug was just what I was looking for. As a decorative piece, it can easily blend into a traditional home as well as a modern loft. As a functional item, the glug glug jug not only offers itself up as a vase or pitcher, but also as a guaranteed conversation starter. A great gift for many occasions, or grab one for yourself.

Take a walk down to Homestyle to check out all the great colors, and the staff will be glad to give you a demonstration of the water gurgling in the pitcher.
